Student Response Required: Business Law Topic
This week's question is the first that we will be exploring using the blog format during class. Each student is expected to write a 4-5 sentence response using the information we talked about during class. Students are expected to submit a blog response by midnight on Sunday, January 24.
The labor strike is in its fifth bitter week. The strikers are tense and angry. The workers who remain on the job are both angry and fearful about the situation. For several days nearly a thousand picketers gather at the company's main gate. They are chanting slogans and jeering those who enter the plant. The crowd begins to to throw rocks at the workers who cross the picket line. Then a company truck is set on fire and destroyed.
What powers do the courts have that would be useful in this situation?

How we'll use this blog . . .
With the start of second semester, we will be using this blog to hand in some of our assignments. I want to take a moment to explain how this is going to work. Since we will be having "advisors" visiting some of our classes, they will use this blog to help us with some of our work. Some days, there will be a question posted via blog and students will all be required to answer it. They will do this be using the Comments section below the entry in the blog. This is new for us and we are trying it this year, so please be patient as we make our start.
On a different note, we have had much success with DonorsChoose.org. As I have said before, DonorsChoose is a website where public school teachers can post a project proposal asking for supplies or enrichment materials for their classes. We have had four projects funded through DonorsChoose: two netbooks, high interest literature books, and two Sony cameras. I am so thankful for the generous nature of those who donate. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has supplied half the funding for all of our projects and half of our netbooks were paid for by HP. Right now, I have two projects "live" on DonorsChoose: 12 HP financial calculators and a document camera. If you have a moment, check out either of these projects using the links below.
Check back often; as soon as we are able to meet for all classes, we will begin to add content to our blog.

Recommended Materials for Second Semester Classes
What a snowstorm we had! I know that some of you are finally getting out of your houses and heading out to "civilization." I wanted to post a list of "suggested" and required items for each of the second semester classes. I do not like to require many things for students, but there are some things that students really do need!
Accounting:
Required: White Out, Calculator (do not need scientific)
CBA:
I strongly suggest a flash drive. This will allow students take their work with them from class to complete at home.
Business Law:
Required: Organizational Method--this could be a three ring binder, a two pocket folder, etc.
Students always need to have notebook paper and pens and pencils for daily note taking and assignments.
Please let me know if you need any of these materials.
Thanks,
Mrs. Schany

HP Netbook - - DonorsChoose - - FUNDED!
I am just dropping a post to let anyone who reads this blog know that the DonorsChoose proposal for the HP netbook has been fully funded. Big thanks to HP and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for this!
I am so excited to be able to provide my students with these opportunities.
Have a great holiday break!

DonorsChoose.org
As I am busily preparing for our family holiday, I am also preparing for second semester to begin. I want to share some information with you regarding DonorsChoose.org. DonorsChoose is a non-profit organization where public school teachers can write grant proposals for classroom items. The business department has been so lucky this year; I have received funding for two classroom grants: Learning Law Through Literature and Camera Connections. The first was for 50 high interest books by Alex Flinn and John Grisham for use in our business law class. The second was for two Sony digital cameras. During the first semester I saw a real need for these cameras. I was having to ask students to bring their own cameras to school. Some did not have cameras, so they were using my personal "family" camera. These cameras will allow us to document so many things happening in the classroom as well as helping our technology students who create movies and edit photos with Photoshop.
I currently have two proposals active with DonorsChoose. The first is for a document camera. This is also called an ELMO. This piece of technology is awesome: it can connect to the projector already in my classroom and project a piece of paper without the use of transparencies. How do I envision this being used in the business department? First and foremost, students will be able to take their work, whatever it is, and project it for the entire class to see. This will increase peer editing time and collaborative learning opportunities for the students. For example, accounting students sometimes have trouble with an accounting concept when we apply it. This will allow us to work through the problem together as well as show examples of how and why the problem works this way. Secondly, it will minimize the making and use of transparencies. I make a lot of transparencies in a semester and this will allow me to use a piece of paper for demonstration. Third, it will save classroom time. Sometimes I am able to anticipate an area in which students are going to need extra guided instruction, but sometimes, I am not able to do this. With this document camera, I will be able to continue the instruction with out stopping, making a transparency and then continuing. The possibilities are endless.
Our second grant is for an HP Netbook with built in camera. I have a specific purpose in mind for this: "skyping." Skype is an internet program that allows people to use an internet connection and camera to talk to each other "face-to-face." This idea is very exciting for me. I have already lined up several lawyers to "come" to our classroom via Skype and talk to students about their specialties. This really broadens the experiences for students. It will give them the opportunity to learn a little about the possibilities the exist in the world for them. Anytime we can do that, we accomplish something positive.
Finally, we have been fortunate to receive matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and HP. The Gates Foundation provides half the funding for projects that prepare students for college and life after high school. HP provides 50% for their products through DonorsChoose. This has really altered the cost of these projects!

Thanks for taking the time to read about our projects! I think this blog is going to be so valuable when school begins; it is an easy way for parents to read about what we are doing in our classroom. As always, feel free to contact me via email at jschany@emmetsburg.k12.ia.us.

Welcome to our blog!
I am starting this blog as the end of the first semester rolls to a close. My intention for this blog is for parents and community members to see what is happening in the business department at EHS.
Today there are several things I want to share before the end of the semester for parents who have children enrolled in business classes for second semester.
1. Business Law Class: I am currently compiling a list of attorneys, judges, and/or people who work in the area of law to use as resources for our second semester business law class. We are hoping to use Skype to invite these people into our classroom during the second semester. As a class, we utlize our local attorneys for everything and I sometimes worry that we are asking too much of them. With Skype capabilities, we will be able to visit with them via internet and camera so that we can see them and they can see us. I am really excited about this! One of my objectives with this is for students to ask the questions they are curious about from those who are experts in their field. If you know of someone who would be willing and able to do this, please let me know. Any time students can make a connection to those outside the school, we are doing something positive.
2. Mock Trial: I am currently working on our trial for second semester for Business Law. I am hoping to have this chosen by the time students come back from break. Many students who are enrolled in the class have stopped in to ask what the trial is about. This is an activity we did two years ago (the last time our law class met) and it was one of the more popular projects we embarked on. For our last trial, local attorney John Brown came to help prepare opening statements and talk to the students about strategy for the trial. We can not thank him enough for that and many students are looking forward to having attorneys help prepare for our trial.
3. Accounting 1: Accounting 1 will meet sixth hour next semester. There are no assignments over break and students need to come to class second semester with their workbooks and materials.
4. Accounting 2/Entering the Job World: The schedule was changed for these classes. Entering will now meet during 5th hour and Accounting 2 during 7th.
Finally, I want to leave my first post with great news before we break for the holidays. Our Camera Connections project from DonorsChoose was fully funded last night. I had written a grant for two digital cameras for classroom use and it was funded by three donors from different areas of the United States. I am so excited for our students - - - they will not have to bring their own cameras with them to class!
DonorsChoose is a non-profit organization where public school teachers can write requests to be funded. I received a grant for 50 high interest reading books dealing with legal situations in November and I just found out this morning that my camera grant is fully funded. If you have a moment, visit DonorsChoose and check out the projects for Emmetsburg Community Schools. There are a lot of very worthy projects out there looking for funding. To search for projects in our district, choose See Projects, State, then District. Emmetsburg Community is there.
Check back often! Have a safe and happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Schany
